Well. Where to even begin with what a year 2020 was!
A year filled with lockdown birthdays, toilet roll shortages, plenty of uncertainty and everything from important work meetings to family quizzes taking place on Zoom- is it just us, or did anyone else not know that Zoom existed before March 2020? Apparently it was founded in 2011!!
But it's not all been doom and gloom. If there's one thing for sure, 2020 has been the year of realising that it's the small things that are important and learning to find the positives in even the strangest situations. So in the spirit of positivity, here's a look back at some of the amazing things that have happened this year for YMCA Crewe, and some of the things we've achieved:
We held our first 'Sleepeasy' and managed to raise over £3,000
We were fortunate to receive a three-year grant from the Steve Morgan Foundation to go towards our independent living and training programmes
Our GLO Cafe opened to the public and then adapted to open for a takeaway service
We held our very own 'Health Week' and cycled the distance of Crewe to London!
We adapted to the new social distancing measures and kept spirits high at YMCA Crewe by holding 'courtyard entertainment' sessions that involved quizzes and karaoke
We took on our first social media interns from Keele University and won an award for Social Inclusion!
Our residents took part in plenty of gardening and bricklaying, helping to bring our allotment to life and learning valuable skills
We became pro's at delivering food straight to our residents doors and delivered everything from BBQ food, to Easter eggs to roast dinners!
Plenty of generous businesses made our time in lockdown that little bit easier by donating supplies, food and money
We started this blog!
We directed a virtual tour of YMCA Crewe for our YouTube channel- very 2020!
Our residents were offered the chance to take part in placement schemes in various employment areas
We held our first ever virtual marathon and people all across the World joined us to raise over £1000, and to raise vital awareness for the YMCA. This marathon also allowed us to support two small local businesses via the printed T-shirts we had made!
Looking back, 2020 has actually been a rather good year for us all here at YMCA Crewe, and its certainly showed us how to come together (virtually or socially distanced of course!) and adapt to change. Whilst we may not have been able to do everything we wanted to, there's certainly new things that we've achieved that we never would have done if it hadn't been for all the highs and lows of 2020.
Now onto the fun stuff- Christmas!
Christmas Day looked a little different here this time around, as I'm sure it did for many of you as well.
We were able to put our food delivery practice to the test, as it was meals on wheels for all of our residents! Along with a delicious Christmas dinner, we delivered Christmas Quizzes, because not even Covid-19 can save you from completing a quiz on Christmas Day!
Our staff had lots of fun preparing the food, and everyone even managed to find room for a bit of trifle!
The food deliveries continued into Boxing Day, with sausage baps and pizzas doing the rounds.
Despite being very different to our usual Christmas's, we still managed to make the day as enjoyable and as festive as possible- it will be one to remember, that's for sure!!
We hope that you all managed to have a lovely Christmas and we wish you all a fantastic 2021. Thank you for all your continued support throughout the year!
